SIT STAY READ is a Chicago-based volunteer literacy organization that brings
dogs and kids together to make reading fun.
Reading aloud is a critical component of early childhood literacy. Children who
have difficulty reading have an especially hard time reading aloud in front of
peers and adults. SIT STAY READ programs allow children to read aloud to
specially trained therapy dogs. The dogs increase confidence and generate
excitement about reading.

Our mission is to improve literacy skills and foster a love of learning by
partnering SIT STAY READ therapy dog teams with children in Chicago area
schools, libraries and community facilities.

A recent report found that the average child growing up in a middle-class
family has been exposed to 1,000 to 1,700 hours of one-on-one picture book
reading before entering school. The average child in a low-income family has
been exposed to 25 hours during this same time period. For this reason, we are
especially committed to reaching children in low-income families.
